About our school

Maghera Primary School is just beside Maghera Garden Centre, on the outskirts of the town. It is a controlled school of approximately 100 pupils.

The school has a Christian ethos and is characterised by the following mission statement:

‘As a caring, friendly, community school, Maghera Primary School will educate and develop each child to their full potential, in order to meet the challenges of life.’

The current building is 52 years old and comprises of four classrooms, a library and computer suite, a multi-purpose hall, meals kitchen and a mobile classroom currently used for our afterschool club. We have fantastic school grounds which have been recently developed and include a football pitch, 2 playgrounds, a wildlife garden and pond, raised beds and a maze. School has a breakfast club and afterschool facility run by staff members. This is partly funded through Extended Schools. We also offer an extensive range of afterschool clubs to all ages.

There is a teaching complement of four teachers, including the principal, a principal release teacher, a part-time Literacy Support Teacher and four classroom assistants. The school secretary, caretaker, two lunchtime supervisors and kitchen staff complete a team dedicated to the welfare of the children at the school.

The school is committed to providing a broad and balanced curriculum where each pupil is encouraged to develop as a life-long learner. ICT skills are important in achieving this goal and interactive whiteboards are in use in all classrooms. We also have 15 iPads for use throughout the school. School provides weekly French lessons for all pupils.

The school is involved in a robust shared education programme with St. Mary’s Primary School, Maghera and each child benefits from shared lessons throughout the year.

Maghera Primary School offers outstanding pastoral care and the pupils voice is paramount. We have an active school council and eco-committee. The School Development Plan evolves from collaborative self-evaluation and well informed action planning. Our governors and staff are extremely proud of the high standards achieved by our pupils both inside and outside school and are grateful to the pupils and their parents for their ongoing positive commitment in achieving this high level of success.

A warm and friendly atmosphere exists in the school and parents are welcomed and encouraged to take an active role in their children’s education. There is an active Parents’ Support group which has contributed by organising social and fundraising events.
