Sensory Regulation in The Butterfly Room 🦋

30th Apr 2026

Sensory regulation sessions for preschool pupils are carefully planned here at Maghera Primary school around each child’s individual sensory profile, stage of development and communication needs.

Activities are play-based, predictable and flexible, using a range of calming or alerting sensory resources such as movement, deep pressure, tactile play and quiet spaces. Sessions are delivered in short, structured bursts and adapted in response to the child’s cues to ensure they feel secure, supported and regulated.

Sensory regulation breaks are an essential daily part of our school day as they help our young children manage sensory overload, reduce anxiety and support emotional regulation. We use various resources for sensory regulation such as fidget toys, a peanut ball, bubbles, the bubble tube or a massage mat.

Sensory regulation sessions enables pupils to engage more successfully in learning, play and social interactions, supporting their wellbeing and development in line with their individual needs.
